NJ Sports Betting History

For decades, US sports betting was outlawed in all but four states. That is, until New Jersey challenged the existing law at the time.

The first challenge came back in 2012 when then-Governor Chris Christie signed a bill that legalized NJ sports betting at casinos and racetracks. Almost immediately, major professional sports organizations sued the state of NJ. At the time, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992 was still in place. This bill significantly restricted sports betting across the USA. Under PASPA, it was only allowed in Oregon, Delaware, Montana and Nevada.

Legal proceedings went on for years until the case reached the US Supreme Court in 2018. The court ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional. Straightaway, it was overturned by the court. As a result, it was left up to each state to make its own sports betting laws.
